Twelve life principles for creating an extraordinary life – the life that you deserve

‘It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that they are difficult.’ – Seneca

I am constantly receiving mails that question me about success, happiness and the art living a more enlightened life. I am by no means perfect and by no means a guru, but I have a list, which I constantly review as my blueprint for living a life in which I make every effort to fulfil my God-given potential. Why don’t you sit down and write down your twelve life principles.

No matter how old you may be, the time to pursue your goals and dreams is right now. Let me share with you my personal list of life principles. Consider applying some of these in your daily life and I assure you that you will move closer towards your goals.

1. Be an original
You are unique! Believe in yourself. Immediately resolve to accept one hundred per cent responsibility for who you are and who you will be. Don’t make excuses, make progress.

2. You become what you constantly think about
Change your thoughts and you change your world. Take charge of your thinking. Become more aware of your thoughts. Are they positive? Ask yourself whether they serve you and, more importantly, do they help and serve others? Choose to think uplifting thoughts instead of discouraging ones. Your current thoughts are creating your future life. What you think about or focus on the most will appear as your life.

3. Think big!
Most people don’t dream big enough, think big enough, achieve big enough, and strive high enough.

4. Always be proactive
Take the initiative and be responsible.

5. Success and happiness is the progressive realisation of a worthy ideal or goal
Set worthy goals and take constant action on achieving these goals.

6. Think win-win
Always seek mutual benefit.

7. You can get whatever you want in life if you help enough people to get whatever they want
I learnt this from the master motivator Zig Ziglar. Never forget this brilliant advice.

8. Develop an attitude of gratitude
When you’re grateful for what you currently have in your life, it focuses you on the best, and you attract more of the best. So when you have a lack of gratitude in your life, you’re probably focusing on the worst. A state of gratefulness acts as an antidote to negative feelings.

9. ‘There is no passion to be found in playing small, in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.
Powerful words from Nelson Mandela, one of the planet’s most revered citizens.

10. Commit to never-ending learning

Find models of excellence. Find the best and do what they do. Become a dedicated student of success. Readers are leaders and learners are earners.

11. Always be proactive about your health and fitness
It is hard to maintain a positive mind-set if you neglect your health. Great mental energy and health comes from a commitment to a healthier lifestyle. You feel more positive when you feel healthier. Remember that you are only one meal away or one walk away from committing to a healthier lifestyle.

12. I think that it is important not to take yourself too seriously
Life is a joyous, loving, magical experience, and laughter is an essential element to happiness and fulfilment. Be playful and have FUN!

I assure you that if you live your life by these guiding principles, then you are well on the way to gaining fulfilment and an extraordinary quality of life.

‘The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.’ Michelangelo
