Are you a strong leader?

Running a business is a challenge, especially in tough times. The businesses that thrive are the ones that have strong leadership. So, if you haven’t been a strong leader, now’s the time to do so. This may require some major changes in how you run your business, your business model, and even the people that work for you.

Leaders are made, not born. You learn to become a leader by doing what other excellent leaders have done before you. You become proficient in your job or skill, and then you become proficient at understanding the motivations and behaviours of other people. As a leader, you combine your personal competencies with the competencies of a variety of others into a top class functioning team that can out-play and out-perform all its competitors.

The time to take action is now! If your business isn’t where you want it to be, then it’s time to stop making excuses and look in the mirror. Is your business a reflection of you, the leader of the business? If so, you can make some changes and improvements to what you are doing, and it will lead you to a much better place!

Action Exercises:

1. Set high standards for yourself and for each person in your team and then dedicate yourself to achieving those standards. Set a good example. Be an inspirational leader by being a role model for everyone else to follow. The more people look up to you, the better they will do their work and the happier they will be.

2. Delegate complete responsibility for results to your subordinates. Discuss and agree on exactly what should be done, when it should be done by, and to what standard. Then, get out of the way and let them perform.

3. Express complete confidence in your subordinate’s ability to do an excellent job. Tell them how important and valuable they are and then give them both the responsibility and the opportunity to do their job the very best they know how. Radiate an attitude of confident expectation.
